If you want to earn as much money as possible, master the trail. You need to tackle the Challenge Trails which are marked green on the map. You will get money reward when you complete each trail. But if you are able to do so within the time limit, then you will get the bonus reward.

You need to choose whether to pick Quad or Truck, and stick to it. There is no point of spending money to choose both. Simply choose one and you can spend money for the upgrade.

You should know that Quad is faster, but it takes time to master. Truck, on the other hand, has a little bit of everything required for offroad adventure. So, make sure that you pick the right one.
